Need an avatar? This company offers realistic 3D face capture in just five minutes

A London-based company has developed 3D face capture technology that can render an ultra-realistic human face in just five minutes.

Lumirithmic, a spinout from Imperial College London, created a software that can be used in tablets and smartphones.

The technology captures not just facial features but little details of the skin in different lighting conditions.

"Our process pipeline involves quite a bit of artificial intelligence process, which involves deep learning and some of the traditional statistical artificial intelligence algorithms," said Yiming Ling of Lumirithmic.

"The quality of our scan is as good as the Hollywood-style devices," he added.

The technology can be used to replace cartoon avatars in the metaverse or as a platform for virtual meetings, job interviews, and other appointments.

"Our goals are to be able to go beyond just the face to the whole human body and create a full realistic avatar," said Abhijeet Ghosh of Lumirithmic.

"Once that happens then maybe you're looking at the entire fashion industry or the clothing that you might want to try out in a virtual space."
