Meet Ameca, a humanoid robot which can show emotions
A British tech firm has created a humanoid robot which can show emotions.
Named Ameca and dubbed as "the most expressive robot," it was developed by Engineered Arts as a platform for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning development.
A full-size humanoid, its face and body resembles that of a real human. It has at least 17 motors in its head which are AI- and human-operated.
"The facial expressions are controlled by the operator but it's basically a camera system which looks at what the operator is doing and makes it happen on the robot. So, the human smiles, the robot smiles," said Morgan Roe, the Director of Operations for Engineered Arts.
Ameca was recently showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where it greeted and spoke to people.
With its ability to interact with humans, Ameca is seen as a potential service robot in public places.
"It's unlikely we'll see something like this in people's homes in the next couple of decades. But we will see them in areas like receptions, maybe in a hotel, shopping malls, or airports," Roe said.
Engineered Arts is also developing another version of Ameca, this time one which has the ability to walk. They hope to complete it in two years.
