4 beauty products among best inventions of 2021

Do you have self-care listed among your New Year's Resolutions?

Skincare and haircare can be simple enough, but if you want to up the ante or transition to more sustainable products, check out these four beauty innovations which landed on TIME Magazine's 100 Best Inventions.

1. Everist Waterless Shampoo

The typical shampoo we use contains 70% water. In an effort to contribute to water conservation, Everist created a waterless shampoo—a haircare concentrate which eliminates water from its formula.

The product has a paste-like texture and activates upon contact with water when washing the hair. It is made from plant-based ingredients and free from sulfates, silicone, fragrance, and preservatives.

Aside from shampoo, Everist also created conditioner and body wash with the same waterless concept. The products are packaged into recycled tubes for easier dispensing.

2. L'Oreal Water Saver

Salons use water to wash the hair of their clients getting haircuts and other haircare treatments. It's not easy to save water, as they also have to maintain the quality of their services, so we can just imagine the amount of their water bill each month.

L'Oreal came up with a water saver which mixes micronized water with hair products in the cartridge slots so they will be more efficiently delivered through the water stream.

Attachable to sinks, the shower system helps in better distribution and absorption of products as well as in faster rinsing. All in all, it cuts water usage by 80%.

The water saver, which also allows to users to monitor their water and energy consumption, is now undergoing pilot trials with the efforts of L'Oreal and Gjosa, a Swiss environmental innovation company.

A global rollout for salons is planned for 2023 and a version for home use is also in the pipeline.

3. Supergoop! Daily Dose Vitamin C + SPF 40 Serum

Vitamin C helps to keep the skin bright and also prevents dark spots, so theoretically, it makes sense to develop a skincare product to take advantage of this. In practice, however, the active ingredient is not effective under the sun and also makes the skin more vulnerable to sunburn.

Supergoop! came up with a solution: a skin serum which offers a daily dose vitamin C with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 40. The product, which took three years to develop, is the first-ever hybrid serum for Supergoop!

The serum contains protective and anti-aging components and also filters blue light from electronic screens when indoors.

4. Opulus Beauty Labs

The Opulus Beauty Labs System offers a precise and potent delivery of skincare products. It includes the Opulus Activator, a blender-like device which whips and heats treatment formula that is more easily absorbed by the skin in less than two minutes.

Ingredients for the products, such as Retinol, come in single-serve pods called "opoules."

$8 million has been invested for the development of chemical peeling and brightening treatments.
