Tamagotchi makes a comeback as smartwatch in 25th anniversary

Missing your virtual fur baby from the 90s?

You can now welcome them again—not in your arms but on your wrist—as the Tamagotchi makes a comeback as a smartwatch!

On the 25th anniversary of the toy's release, Japanese video game publisher Bandai Namco dropped a smarter version of the device.

Instead of the previous hand-held keychain design, it is now available as a smartwatch with touchscreen and voice control. That means you can stroke your pet's head and wake them up like you would do with your real fur babies!

The Tamagotchi retained its egg shape but you can now strap it on your wrist so you can take your pet with you everywhere you go. The device also functions as a pedometer, so you can track your steps every day as you take a stroll with your pet.

It also has a wireless connectivity feature now, which allows you to send your pets to your friends for playdates with their fellow fur babies.

Aside from the basic care functions such as feeding, bathing, and dressing, the Tamagotchi has more characters now and extra content can be unlocked with a key plug-in sold separately.

With the Tama Smart Card, available in "Rainbow" and "Sweet" variations, you can have additional items, accessories, and mini games.

The new Tamagotchi has been on sale in Japan since November 23, but there are no details yet for a global release. It costs around $60 and is available in two colors, mint green and coral pink.
