USAID launches P1.65B project to improve Philippine digitization

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has formally launched a P1.65 billion ($33 Million) digital connectivity project that aims to bridge the digital divide in the Philippines.

The Better Access and Connectivity Project (BEACON) was to promote economic growth through the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT.)

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for expanded digital infrastructure and broadband connectivity,” said USAID Philippines Acting Mission Director Sean Callahan in a statement Friday.

Through the BEACON project, the government’s digitization efforts will be implemented easier, and low-cost internet access for community networks may be attained.

BEACON will also support the country’s national region and help advance the US government’s goal for a free and open Indo-Pacific region through digital connectivity.

“We are pleased to partner with the Philippine government, private sector, and other organizations to accelerate the country’s economic growth and regional competitiveness by supporting a stronger, more competitive digital ecosystem,” Callahan said. —  Jiselle Anne Casucian/RSJ, GMA News
