PlayStation announces next-gen console

PlayStation on Tuesday announced the release of its next-generation console and its paired controller that aims to deepen the player's immersive experience while in-game.

"One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games, and we had the opportunity with our new controller to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion," SIE president and chief executive officer Jim Ryan said in a statement.

According to Ryan, PlayStation 5's new controller will have two key innovations.

The first innovation is the controller's adoption of haptic feedback, meant to create a broader range of feedback and experience depending on the situation in the game. This would replace the "rumble" technology of controllers since the 5th generation consoles.

Meanwhile, the second innovation are "adaptive triggers" which were incorporated into the trigger buttons of the controller, allowing developers to program the resistance of the triggers so that players may feel "tactile sensations."

"In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller, and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal," Ryan said.
