Cable landing station for national broadband to be completed this month —DPWH

The cable landing station connecting the Philippines to internet hubs Asia and the United States is set to be completed this month, the country’s top infrastructure chief said Monday.

“The NBP (National Broadband Plan) has also achieved the construction of the cable landing and the repeater stations which will be completed by July,” DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said in a speech in Pasay City.

His remarks come nearly two years since the Philippine government teamed up with Facebook in November 2017 to create the cable landing system.

Under the partnership, Facebook will construct and operate a cable system that will land in the cable stations in Baler, Aurora; and in Poro Point in San Fernando, La Union.

Villar said the 240-kilometer route will be done by September 2019 at the earliest.

“It is envisioned that the two terabyte capacity shall be harnessed through the operations of the Cable Landing Stations,” he said.

In June 2018, the DICT, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP), and the National Transmission Corp. (TransCo) signed an agreement on utilizing NGCP’s “dark fiber” assets for the NBP. —VDS, GMA News
