Google pays tribute to PHL's Jose Rizal
Filipino national hero Jose Rizal is featured in a Google doodle on his 158th birth anniversary on Wednesday.
Rizal, is a physician, naturalist, linguist, and novelist was born in Calamba, Laguna on June 19, 1861 to Francisco Mercado Rizal and Teodora Alonso.
He studied at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila and took up medicine the University of Sto. Tomas and specialized in ophthalmology.
He left for Spain for further studies. It is in Europe that he wrote his novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
It was in 1892 that he helped form La Liga Filipina, a nationalist movement. By July 1892, he was implicated in a series of uprising against the Spanish government and was then exiled to Dapitan.
In 1896, he was arrested and imprisoned in Fort Santiago. He was executed via firing squad on December 30, 1896. — BAP, GMA News
