Kill boredom with these 6 games from 2 Pinoy studios

Filipino game development studios are working hard to create great games and today, we check out six games developed by our very own Taktyl Studios and Bacolod-based Tapatap Games.

Taktyl Studios has been busy with several projects, three of them being “Crazy Crash City,” “Over Easy: Egg Jump,” and “Rogue Reaver.”

Tapatap Games meanwhile aims to explore opportunities and carve out its own niche in the gaming industry. It has three casual games: Its first mobile game "Pillars,"  "Hit the Can," and "Haloes."

1. Crazy Crash City

“Crazy Crash City” is a top-down driving and action game featuring “intense crashing action, high-speed police car chases, and a super adorable Corgi.”

According to Taktyl Studios creative and business support executive Flip Velez, “the game revolves around Blitz the Corgi as he crashes his car around the city.”

Its simple controls allow you to maneuver Blitz’s car so you can crash it into various things in the environment. Deal enough damage in the city, and you get to move on to the next to sow even more chaos.

In early 2018 when Taktyl Studios was in its infancy, a company game jam led to the birth of the “Crazy Crash City” concept. “The concept of the game won the heart of our executives and was pushed into production,” explained Velez.

The developers will translate player feedback “into pixels, lines of code, and adjustments in design,” so we can expect more improvements as well as additional cars, destructibles, and mayhem.

“Crazy Crash City” will be the company’s first indie mobile title.

2. Over Easy: Egg Jump

The game is Taktyl Studios' very first indie title and its first foray into Facebook Instant Games

“The game features very simple gameplay that is hard to master,” said Velez. “Tapping and holding charges Cregg the Egg and then releasing makes him jump. It’s always a rocky start but the more you play, the better you become.”

“Over Easy: Egg Jump” was developed to be a portfolio piece that would prove the company’s Facebook Instant Games development experience to potential clients; and to create a gallery of games that the studio can re-brand to the clients’ expectations.

3. Rogue Reaver

Called a “passion project” slated for a 2019 release, "Rogue Reaver" provides the company an avenue to “stretch its wings” and create something “heavier” than its other games.

“We wanted to create a mid-core experience that had more or less a niche,” said Velez. “There was also a list of features that we wanted to implement that could only work in a stealth game. Seeing as the market was lacking some stealth games, we decided to attack there.”

4. Hit the Can

Tapatap Games’ casual mobile game “Hit the Can” is based on the Filipino game “Tumbang Preso,” and tasks players with hitting cans with a slipper.

The gameplay, while simple, is challenging. “The player has a limited amount of chances to flick the slipper, so their timing and ‘flicking trajectory’ have to be just right,” said producer Kia Amazona.

There are also “boss” stages where the cans move more quickly. Beating stages awards players with diamonds, which can be used to buy additional skins for the slippers.

5. Haloes

"Haloes" has players surviving a downpour of rings. “The game challenges the player’s control, perception, and concentration,” explained Amazona. “The player earns points by making one or two orbs pass through the rings, and those points are converted into level experience.”

6. Pillars

Tapatap Games’ first mobile game, "Pillars" has players aligning, well, pillars with each other as a boulder rolls on top of them. "The game is endless,” said  Amazona.

“There are no levels, but it will have challenging elements. Along the way, the player collects crystals, which they can use to unlock new themes in the Shop.”

The studio hopes to one day explore other genres outside hyper-casual gaming, such as action-adventure, RPGs, and open world games.
