Will this Pinoy-made real-life hoverboard take us back to the future?
Back to the Future fans were disappointed when devices called "hoverboard" self-balancing boards came out and had wheels, instead of a propulsion-based system that made the cool board used by Marty McFly in the 80's film such a dream item.
One Filipino, Kyxz Mendoza, hopes to bring to market the first true working and commercially-viable hoverboard in Asia.
As seen in a report by Raffy Tima on 24 Oras, the young inventor seems close to his goal.
"I would say it's 90 percent ready. This is my 11th successful flight and this is my first outdoor flight," Mendoza said. "Lahat kasi indoors."
At first glance, the contraption made of aluminum beams, wires, batteries, and eight propellers of varying sizes doesn't look like much.
But after three years of working and cutting weight to make it float, the board can hover above the ground at a respectable height for five to ten minutes.
Mendoza, however, hopes to improve on the design and may even do so as investors began to pour in to fund the project that was initially covered by his gigs as a dancer for the Philippine All Stars and various projects in video production.
"Karamihan ng mga kinikita ko dun, lalo na nung umpisa, diyan lahat napupunta. Pati yung savings nagalaw ko," Mendoza said. "Because of lack of funding, yung nabibili ko na set-up always kapos yung lakas.
"Inaral ko lahat ng pwede kong aralin about electronics, about power supply, about flight control, yung mga pitch ng propeller, inaral ko lahat, yung mga lakas ng motor, efficiency, everything," he added.
Once he finishes testing the board and adding features such as safety cages around the propellers, Mendoza plans on demoing the hoverboard at outdoor events to show off the truly-Pinoy invention. —Rie Takumi/JST, GMA News
