Final Fantasy XII remaster details, launch date revealed

Fans won’t have long to wait before they can get their hands on the highly anticipated remaster of “Final Fantasy XII.”

It was just announced during the opening ceremony of the Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary event in Tokyo that “Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age” will be released this July 11 exclusively for the PlayStation 4.

Accompanying the announcement was the unveiling of new art from Akihiko Yoshida, renowned artist and longtime “Final Fantasy” character designer.

“Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age” is a visual overhaul of the original game. With support for high definition graphics, its textures are sharper and more detailed. According to reports, the remaster also comes with improved character models, backgrounds, and cut scenes.

The remaster supports 7.1 surround sound. While its soundtrack has been remastered, nostalgic players have the option to select the classic music, instead. In addition, they can opt for either English or Japanese voiceovers.

Western players will also get to experience the Zodiac Job System for the first time. Originally only available to a Japan-only release of the game, this system introduces 12 new License Boards, each representing a specific job and Zodiac sign.

Other enhancements include an auto-save feature, faster loading times, a brand-new Trial mode, and more.

“Final Fantasy XII” was originally released in 2006 for the PlayStation 2. Set in the realm of Ivalice, the story revolves around warring nations. When her country is conquered by the enemy, Princess Ashe, the heir to the Dalmascan throne, dedicates her life to liberating her kingdom. Her path soon entwines with those of a young street urchin with dreams of becoming a sky pirate, a pair of actual sky pirates, a disgraced knight accused of murdering the king, and a girl whose aspirations involve becoming a dancer. Together, they embark on a quest to vanquish the dark powers holding their home and people hostage.
