Batman comes to Telltale Games
Fans of the episodic adventure game formula developed by American game studio Telltale Games will be excited to know that another big property in the world of popular culture is getting their blend of video game treatment, as the developer announced via a video teaser at this year’s The Game Awards that they are making a game based on the DC Comics character Batman!
While no details have been released on the game, it’s a safe bet to assume that the adventure will focus on either the early days of Batman’s career (aka Batman: Year One), or during his prime when his reputation as a ‘Dark Knight Vigilante” has been rooted and established. There’s also the question if players are going to assume the main role of Bruce Wayne/ Batman himself, or possibly that of his allies like Commissioner James Gordon or ward Dick Grayson/ Robin to make it more of a perspective adventure. In their games Telltale has always made it a point to create a world where the player’s actions and decisions affect the entire outcome of the story, so it’s possible that this Batman game is all about his legend and whether it’s going to be viewed as good or bad in Gotham City depending on one’s choices.
Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and first appearing on the pages of Detective Comics #27 in 1939, Batman has appeared in various mediums ranging from comics to television to movies, and is considered one of the most recognizable popculture icons in human history. As the secret identity of billionaire playboy and socialite Bruce Wayne, tragedy struck Batman’s childhood when his parents were murdered by a criminal right in front of his eyes. Dedicating his life to eliminating the “superstitious and cowardly”, he travels the world to learn every form of art and skill necessary to combat crime without taking a life. After several years he returns home, and adopts the cape and cowl of a bat as his symbol.
With the superhero just celebrating his 75th Anniversary last year and Rocksteady Studios just wrapping up their epic adventure game series with this year’s “Batman Arkham Knight”, it will be interesting to see how Telltale Games delivers with the Caped Crusader’s world after scoring critical hits with other game licenses based on The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Back to the Future.
