Move over, Godzilla: New ‘Gamera’ movie in the works

In celebration of the kaiju’s 50th anniversary, a new “Gamera” movie is being developed, according to Kotaku.com

A late 2015 release is planned for the film, which will see a redesigned Gamera fighting classic kaiju villain Gyaos – a gargantuan, pterosaur-like monstrosity – and a new tentacled behemoth. We see both creatures in the trailer, and Gamera himself in the final few seconds. As seen in the trailer, the monsters will be getting the CGI treatment. Sorry, traditionalists, no sweaty men in rubber suits here.

Gamera was created to cash in on Godzilla’s popularity. The fictional creature first appeared in Daiei Film’s 1965 movie, “Gamera.” In it, the eponymous kaiju was a giant, flight-capable, prehistoric, tortoise-like monster that laid waste to a Japanese city after its millennia-long slumber was disturbed by an atomic blast. The movie ended with Gamera being launched into space.

Despite his somewhat villainous portrayal in the original film, he would eventually serve as a more heroic figure in following movies. He would go on to visit other planets and fight invading forces of aliens.

The last “Gamera” film, “Gamera the Brave,” was released in 2006. In this film, Gamera battled a spine-covered kaiju called Zedus.

The new “Gamera” film will be a reboot of the franchise. It is being directed by Katsuhito Ishii, and will be produced by Kadokawa Pictures. — TJD, GMA News
