Classic Pacman game finally goes mobile
After 35 years, the beloved pizza-shaped, pellet-chomping Pac-Man is coming back to enthrall a new generation of gamers.
Bandai Namco announced the new game will be titled "Pac-Man 256" - the 256 in reference to a glitch in the original 1980 game when players reach Level 256.
The game maker, which teamed up with Hipster Whale, released a video trailer of this mobile game.
Pac-Man debuted as an arcade game in 1980. Even if the coin-operated arcade game cabinets were hardly mobile at the time, this did not stop Pac-Man from becoming a cultural icon.
The 256 glitch
A separate report on T3.com said the "256" in the new game's title refers to the glitch where half of the screen is filled with random characters.
"In the new game, the glitch is the main villain, with players having to escape through an endless maze," it said, adding Pac-Man will still have to run from the ghosts.
It quoted Bandai Namco executive Tatsuya Kubota as saying they "couldn't miss such an opportunity" to create a new game.
Another article on Phandroid said the game will be a freemium with in-app purchases. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
