LOOK: Sesame Street gets a new look for a new generation of kids

Sesame Street, the well-loved educational show, is getting a slight update in time for its 46th season, while keeping its old-school homey touch.

Tech site Mashable this week posted photos of some of the remodeling work headed by scenic designer David Gallo.

One of the changes is Big Bird's nest —minus the construction doors but now with shelves, a lamp and a mailbox.

"What I wanted was for this not so much to be a dead end, but a part of the whole flow," Gallo said.

Another change is the relocation of Oscar the Grouch and his iconic trash can home - nearer the center of the neighborhood, at a recycling zone.

The iconic Hooper's Store got a makeover yet retained its 1960s look, with a neon sign being the only indication of modern times.

Another new feature is a community garden, which Gallo said was "about the community being able to gather in the public space."

Other changes included a community center with a roof deck.

Yet, for all these changes, Gallo said the feeling of Sesame Street was not lost as he cited the reaction of original cast member Bob McGrath.

He said McGrath, who walked through the set with him, felt like he was still on Sesame Street.

"For him to look around and feel like he was still on Sesame Street really told me that I did my job right," he said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
