‘Snake’ classic mobile phone game gets makeover for smartphone era

Remember "Snake," the addictive little game you used to play on your pre-smartphone Nokia?

Good news for those who miss the game: it's about to make a comeback on smartphones and tablets, with new features for modern devices.

"Taneli Armanto, the creator of the original Nokia Snake game, returns with Snake Rewind - a modern retake of the classic Snake game," RumilusDesign, co-creator of the resurrected game, said in a YouTube video.

It said "Snake Rewind" combines the "iconic elements and intuitive gameplay from the original Snake game" and "cool visual effects, sounds and great new features."

RumilusDesign indicated the new game will be released May 14, for iPhones and iPads (iOS), Android, and Windows Phone devices.

A report on tech site The Verge said the new version of the game will have high-score leaderboards and new power-ups, and an "ability to rewind if you crash your snake."

The game will have 10 levels with music and visual design, including a throwback version as if a player were playing the game on a classic phone.

The Verge added that while "Snake Rewind" will be free to play, it may have in-app purchases.

UK's The Guardian noted Armanto, a Finnish developer, had the game preloaded on Nokia’s 6110 phone in 1997.  — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
