Pro-PHL, Indonesian hackers clash anew

After a brief truce of sorts, pro-Philippine and pro-Indonesian hackers engaged in another skirmish online over the weekend, with a pro-Philippine hacker group defacing an Indonesian site supposedly in retaliation for the defacement of two Philippine sites.

The two sides already had a brief exchange last week after pro-Philippine hackers defaced some Indonesian sites to seek clemency for Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina sentenced to death for a drug-related case.

Over the weekend, pro-Philippine Blood Sec Hackers defaced at least one Indonesian site, after it supposedly attacked Philippine websites including that of the Department of Education in Davao.

"You promised to stop the attacks if the said group stop(ped) their attacks and apologize(d) for what they did and even threatened one of the domain registr(ies) of the Philippines. After one of the government-associated website(s) of the Philippines has been defaced this morning ... you have failed to do ... what you have said," read the message by the pro-Philippine hackers on the defaced Indonesian site.

The pro-Philippine hackers said this was a "warning" that if the attacks on Philippine websites were not stopped, "we have no choice but to set ... all-out attacks on Indonesian websites."

Last week, both sides had a truce of sorts after Veloso was given a reprieve by the Indonesian government.

At the time, Blood Sec Hackers defaced some Indonesian sites to seek amnesty for Veloso. It issued an apology and supposedly fixed the defaced sites after Veloso was granted a reprieve.

But a report on PinoyHackNews.com early Monday said pro-Indonesian hackers were linked to the defacement of the sites of DepEd-Davao and Central Luzon State University.

As of Monday morning, the DepEd-Davao site had an "Under Maintenance" page, while that of Central Luzon State University appeared to have been restored. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
