WATCH: Astroboy reboot teaser blasts off

After so many years, one of Japan's most iconic characters is finally getting a reboot for a new generation of kids.

No, Astro Boy isn't exactly getting shut down and restarted, but he's getting a new show with a new animation style, as shown in a YouTube video.

Posting the teaser video of "Astro Boy Reboot" are Caribara Production, Shibuya Productions, and Tezuka Productions.

According to tech site Mashable, the animation looks "like a return to the simple illustration style featured in the original manga comic launched in the 1950s."

Mashable said a CG-animated version was released in 2009, but was not quite a hit.

"This new, slightly retro version of Astro Boy, could be what animation purists familiar with the character have been hoping for after so many years," it added.

A report on Variety.com last year said the new show may be made up of 26 half-hour segments, and may mix 2D and CG animation.

Variety added the reboot "will be set in the present and boast a contemporary design, targeting new generations of kids." — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
