Live-action ‘Legend of Zelda’ in the works

From video game consoles, "The Legend of Zelda" may soon jump over to television as a live-action series.

A report on The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) cited sources familiar with the matter who said video streaming service Netflix is developing a live action series based on “Zelda.”

The Legend of Zelda is one of the most popular game series of all time, spawning a short-lived cartoon and various manga adaptations. And now Netflix is supposedly gearing up for another Zelda incarnation, this time eyeing a possible live-action series.

"Netflix is describing it as 'Game of Thrones' for a family audience," the WSJ said, quoting an inside source.

Netflix is reportedly working on the project closely with Japanese gaming giant Nintendo, which made 20 “The Legend of Zelda” games since the 1980s.

A separate report on PC World said "The Legend of Zelda" was first released in 1986, and has become one of Nintendo’s most successful franchises.

"The story usually focuses on Link, a young boy in the land of Hyrule who must rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon. The Zelda games are distinguished by their epic settings and adventure-oriented missions," it said.

TV adaptation

The TV adaptation of "Zelda" would feature a fantasy world called Hyrule where a boy named Link must rescue a princess named Zelda.

The WSJ said the “Zelda” games have traditionally included swords and sorcery like “Game of Thrones” though in a light-hearted tone.

Writer wanted

Netflix may have a long road ahead as it is still looking for a writer for the show.

But the WSJ report also said it could be "Game Over" for the project before actual work starts.

When WSJ reached out to them, Netflix declined to comment. Meanwhile, Nintendo said it doesn’t “comment on rumors and speculation.” — Joel Locsin and Bea Montenegro/TJD, GMA News
