Fan-made remake of ‘Warcraft III’ in the works

As popular as Blizzard’s “World of Warcraft” is, people have been clamoring for the franchise to return to its real-time strategy roots.

Well, leave it to fans to give fans what they want.

According to Kotaku, a Russian development team is using a “StarCraft II” mod to recreate the classic real-time strategy game, “Warcraft III.”

According to description below the video, the remake, which is called “WarCraft: Armies Of Azeroth,” will add “new gameplay features” while maintaining the “original balance and graphical design with massive use of resources created by Blizzard Entertainment.”

The developers have set up a Facebook page as well as a website, which is in Russian. Details are sparse at the moment. We still don’t know if the team means to remake the entire game – four single-player campaigns and all – or if they’re just going to concentrate on the multiplayer aspect. But we can expect more news to come as the project gains ground.

“Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos” was released in 2002 to critical acclaim. Its expansion, “Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne,” proved just as successful when it was released the following year.

“Warcraft III” helped catapult the franchise to the stratosphere of gaming greats. It was instrumental in the success of its massively multiplayer follow up, “World of Warcraft.” The devotion of its community of modders also led to the creation of Defense of the Ancients (DotA), which would usher in the golden age of the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) genre. — TJD, GMA News
