Evil Dead returns as a TV show in 2015

After 34 years, the horror spawned by "The Evil Dead" returns—but this time, to the small screen.

The movie, which has since become a cult classic, will be revived in 2015 as a 30-minute TV show starring Bruce Campbell as protagonist Ash, Polygon.com reported.

Even better, Campbell is collaborating with original creator and director Sam Raimi - of the "Spider-Man" movies fame - for the 2015 series.

Polygon.com said the show, titled "Ash vs. Evil Dead," will be a 10-episode series on premium cable channel Starz.

"Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its 'Evil' grip," Starz said.

It said the story revolves around the threat from a Deadite plague that threatens to destroy all of mankind, forcing Ash to "face his demons — personal and literal," Starz added.

The "Evil Dead" franchise started in 1981 with the first film. Raimi and Campbell teamed up for "Evil Dead 2" in 1987 and "Army of Darkness in 1992."

In 2012, a reboot directed by Fede Alvarez and produced by Sam Raimi, Campbell and Tapert was released, with Campbell in a cameo.

"Evil Dead has always been a blast," said Raimi, who will write and direct the first episode of "Ash vs. Evil Dead."

He will also serve as executive producer along with Campbell and Rob Tapert, who also works on Starz's "Spartacus."

Raimi will write the series along with Ivan Raimi and Tom Spezialy.

"Bruce, Rob, and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash's lame, but heroic saga. With his chainsaw arm and his 'boomstick,' Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there's a truckload of it," Raimi said.

For his part, Campbell said he is "really excited" to bring this series to the Evil Dead fans worldwide.

"It's going to be everything they have been clamoring for: serious Deadite ass-kicking and plenty of outrageous humor," he said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
