WATCH: Finally, a working hoverboard!
Where we're going, we don't need roads.
"Back to the Future" fans might just want to save up for this item in time for their favorite movie's 30th anniversary next year.
The "Hendo" hoverboard claims to be the world's first "real" hoverboard, and has taken to Kickstarter to raise funds to develop the machine.
"Where does the HENDO hoverboard stand today? Well, about one inch off the ground. (T)he prototype is real and it works! But to see it hover in person, and better yet, to defy gravity by riding it, is something you need to experience as well," its creators said.
Hendo's engineers have gone through at least 18 prototypes for the board, which promises to give riders a "light springy bounce" when riding it.
The hoverboard's creators claim it will seamlessly integrate with the rider's natural movements.
Safeguards have also been built in, from automatic power-down to interference-free ride surface.
But as of Tuesday (PHL time), the project has so far gotten only $2,425 out of its $250,000 goal. It has a deadline of Dec. 15.
A separate article on Nerdist.com said the hoverboard uses superconductors and a scientific principle called “Lenz’s Law.”
"Lenz’s law states that any induced current will have its own magnetic field that will oppose the original flux. In practice, this opposition creates magnetic fields that repel each other, letting you do some pretty awesome science tricks like seeing how long it takes for a magnet to fall through a copper tube," it said.
But it also noted there are some obstacles to overcome, noting magnetic levitation needs a metallic surface to work.
"Will the Hendo board turn out to be like the x-ray specs at the back of Boy’s Life, or will we all be McFlying high on hoverboards in the near future? Greg Henderson is confident the technology will go far," it said.
