Kingdom Hearts III to use Epic Games' Unreal 4 Engine

Square Enix and Disney fans hopeful for more updates on the upcoming third installment of the Kingdom Hearts series may be in for a big surprise, as acclaimed Japanese video game designer and director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that the upcoming sequel, Kingdom Hearts III, will now be developed for next-generation consoles using Epic Games’ proprietary Unreal Engine 4—the fourth incarnation of the game engine that powered the latter developer’s Unreal video game series.

In an interview with Famitsu that was also featured in an article on Kotaku, Nomura gave the small but crucial update about utilizing the new engine, which will power the game when it sees release for the Sony Playstation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One:

Development is steadily proceeding as planned. Due to the impact of changing the game engine to Unreal Engine 4, which we did for various reasons, there is some difficulty rendering images. And with the full support of Epic Games, we'll be able to progress smoothly.

This past June, at this year’s E3, Square Enix and Disney Interactive Studios revealed a “small teaser” of KH III, which was bundled together with the E3 2014 trailer of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix.

The game's co-director, Tai Yasue, has stated that the sequence shown was in fact the “Opening Sequence” to KH III. He also added that Nomura had “a real clear picture of what the starting sequence” was, and that the text seen and heard was going to “be a real integral part of the story.”

After being officially announced in the 2013 edition of the annual video game event that is the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Kingdom Hearts 3 will once see the return of the series’ main protagonist Sora, as he pairs up once again with other memorable Disney and Square Enix characters such as Donald Duck, Goofy, Riku, and King Mickey.

As a continuation of the Nintendo 3DS game Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, KH III will find our heroes split into separate missions in order to stop Master Xehanort’s plans of balancing the light and the darkness.

No official release date has been given for Kingdom Hearts III, but look forward to the game using the Unreal Engine 4 and coming out for the PS4 and Xbox One soon. — TJD, GMA News
