Resident Evil getting remastered in HD for 2015 release

If the suspense doesn’t kill you, something else will… And it’s coming to glorious HD to boot.

In a move that is certainly a long time coming and will please longtime fans of the franchise, Capcom has officially announced that they are bringing the once-Nintendo exclusive remake of Resident Evil to multiple consoles and PC in 2015.

The announcement, first made public by Japanese gaming news magazine Famitsu, confirms that the game will be remastered and brought to High-Definition, and will be released for the Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.

In a video from the game’s official YouTube page, producers Yoshiaki Hirabayashi and Tatsuya Kitabayashi made the announcement official, confirming that the game will be remastered and updated, with new textures and resolutions, with 1080p support for next-gen consoles, as well as the option to experience the game in 4:3 ratio or 16:9 widescreen display.

Originally released for the Nintendo Gamecube and then ported to the Nintendo Wii, the 2002 edition of Resident Evil, known as BioHazard in Japan, is a remake of the original created by Shinji Mikami that was released for the first Sony Playstation in 1996.

That game became an instant classic and acclaimed hit, despite its noted B-Movie acting and George A. Romero inspired zombie influences, and helped establish the video game genre known as “Survival Horror”, which includes games like Silent Hill and Alone in the Dark.

RE’s popularity also saw Capcom develop ports and sequels, and ultimately into a franchise of its own that has constantly evolved and branched out into other forms of media, including a live-action film series directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich.

While mostly unchanged in terms of story and choosing to play as either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, the RE remake did include new elements not found in the PS1 version, which include restoring the Spencer and Trevor sub-plots, as well as new secrets and endings that were previously not seen in the original.

Like the original game he first Resident Evil game tells the story of a U.S special police force that investigates bizarre murders occurring in the mountains of the fictional mid-western town of Raccoon City. After being attacked by monstrous creatures in the forest, the group is forced to find sanctuary in a mysterious mansion, where not everything is safe or is as it appears to be.
