Dell builds Windows-powered 'Steam Machine'

Valve's gaming-oriented Steam OS may be delayed, but that is not stopping computer maker Dell from coming out with what would be its version of the Steam Machine.

The $550 device built by Alienware—Dell's custom gaming machine division—looks every bit what a Steam Machine should be, though minus Steam OS and Steam controller, PC World said.

Dubbed Alienware Alpha, the machine will come preinstalled with Windows 8.1 and use an Xbox 360 controller, but will have a customized "console mode" interface built for the living room.

With help from Valve, the console mode can let users open Steam Big Picture, media, and other programs using just a gamepad alone.

And once Steam OS finally comes out, PC World said early buyers can switch to it "without fear of voiding their warranty, though it won't be required."

PC World said the console's specs include:

  • Intel Core i3 Haswell processor
  • custom Nvidia GPU with 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory
  • 500GB HDD
  • 4GB memory
  • Dual-band Wireless-AC 1x1 with Bluetooth 4.0
  • Gigabit Ethernet, optical audio out
  • two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports
