Self-balancing bicycle seeks Kickstarter funding
A crowdsourced fundraising campaign is now in progress for a self-balancing bicycle whose makers claim can help a child learn to ride in one day.
Dubbed the Jyrobike, the two-wheeled vehicle uses the principle of gyroscopic precession to keep the rider "upright and stable, even when they tip or wobble."
"We have invented a unique Control Hub built into the front wheel that is able to generate a stabilizing force that resists the toppling force of gravity," the makers said on Kickstarter.com.
The team behind Jyrobike placed a fast spinning disc inside the front wheel of the bicycle, with the resulting gyroscopic force automatically balancing the bike.
It said the control hub built into the front wheel is powered by a rechargeable battery, and drives a spinning flywheel at high speed.
"When turned on it acts like a gyroscope or gyro and provides a stabilizing force, working just as gyros do to keep helicopters stable in the air, boats stable at sea and spaceships stable in orbit," it said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
