Meet the US military’s latest achievement: Pizza that lasts three years
Meet the United States military's latest technological feat: pizza that won't spoil for as long as three years.
Tech site The Verge said the longer-lasting pizza could end up as one of the most coveted meals ready to eat (MRE) rations.
Citing a report from the Associated Press, the report said the pizza was developed by food scientists at the US Army Natick Soldier Research, Development, and Engineering Center in Massachusetts.
"It pretty much tastes just like a typical pan pizza that you would make at home and take out of the oven or the toaster oven," the report quoted lab director Jill Bates as saying.
Bates and spokesperson David Accetta said they liked the pizza.
The Verge said soldiers frequently request pizza but it was a challenge to keep the sauce, cheese, and dough from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria.
Scientists used a preservative known as humectants, which include various kinds of gels and sugars, to keep the food moist.
They also adjusted the pie's acidity to make it less hospitable to bacteria. — VC, GMA News
