Google doodle pays tribute to architect Antoni Gaudi

Search giant Google on Tuesday paid tribute to architect Antoni Gaudi with a doodle marking his 161st birth anniversary.

Visitors to Google's home page were greeted with a doodle featuring some of Gaudi's works.

As in the past, clicking on the doodle will take the visitor to a Search Results page for "Antoni Gaudi."

Gaudí, who many refer to as the father of modern Catalan architecture, was born June 25, 1852 in Reus in Spain. His works are known to show his individual style.

He died on June 10, 1926 at age 73, when he was hit by a tram, NDTV.com said.

NDTV.com said Google's Tuesday doodle featured six of his famous works, including Casa Batlo and Casa Mila.

It said Gaudi started his career by designing lampposts for the Placa Reial in Barcelona, Girossi newsstands, and the Cooperativa Obrera Mataronense building.

But his big break was his work on Casa Vicens, which led to more proposals for him.

Some of his renowned works include Park Guell, Palau Guell, Casa Milla, Casa Batlo and Casa Calvet.

"Gaudi's architectural style was influenced by Gothic Revival and later Modernism, which was based on historic architecture. He is even considered the master of Catalan Modernism. He also took inspiration from oriental styles including styles from India, Persia and Japan, and from geometric forms," NDTV.com said.

It added many of his works have World Heritage status from UNESCO. These include including the Park Guell, the Palau Guell, the Casa Mila, the Nativity facade, the crypt and the apse of the Sagrada Familia, the Casa Vicens and the Casa Batllo along with the crypt of the Colonia Guell in Santa Coloma de Cervello. —VC, GMA News
