Magnitude 5.7 earthquake jolts Maitum, Sarangani

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Sarangani province early Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

In its bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the quake hit the province at 5:42 a.m. and its epicenter was traced some 55 kilometers southwest of Maitum town.

The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 1 km, according to PHIVOLCS.

Intensity IV was felt in Kiamba, Sarangani; T'Boli, Banga, Surallah, and Tupi in South Cotabato.

Intensity III was felt in Maitum, Glan, Malungon, Malapatan, and Alabel in Sarangani; General Santos City; and Norala, City of Koronadal, Santo Niño, and Polomolok, South Cotabato.

Intensity II was felt in Maasim, Sarangani; Lake Sebu, Tantangan, and Tampakan, South Cotabato; and Davao City.

PHIVOLCS said aftershocks and damage are expected.

It first reported the earthquake as having magnitude 5.8 before downgrading it to 5.7. —LDF/KG, GMA Integrated News
