Magnitude 5.7 earthquake hits Ilocos Norte town


A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck a town in Ilocos Norte early Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

In its bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the earthquake was located west of Bangui and occurred at 2:54 a.m.  It was initially recorded as a magnitude 5.9 quake, but was later downgraded to 5.7.

The tremor was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 23 kilometers.

It was felt in the following areas:

  • Intensity V - City of Laoag, Pagudpud, Dumalneg, Burgos, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Adams, Sarrat and San Nicolas in Ilocos Norte
  • Intensity IV- City of Batac, Currimao and Pinili in Ilocos Norte; Sinait, City of Vigan, San Vicente, Santa Catalina, Bantay, Santa Lucia, Santa, Narvacan, San Esteban, Cabugao,San Juan, Caoayan, Magsingal, San Ildefonso, Santa Cruz, Santo Domingo, Santiago, City of Candon, and Santa Maria in Ilocos Sur; Lacub, Tayum, San Juan, La Paz, San Isidro, Pidigan ,Bangued, Tubo, and Bucay in Abra; Baguio City;  Atok, and Buguias in BENGUET; Besao and Bontoc in Mountain Province.  
  • Intensity III - La Trinidad in Benguet
