Cane-attachment seen to help in climbing stairs

A Grade 11 student in Taguig City has developed a gadget that may be attached to a cane and help the motor-impaired climb the stairs.

According to the "Game Changer" report by Martin Javier on "24 Oras," George Lean Tizon's Project SAFER (Stair Assistance for Everyone in Recovery) won the best in innovation award at the Center for Integrated Stem Education Tech Expo in August.

The device, which is attached to common canes, features a gripping mechanism and powerful motor for necessary support.

“This simple attachment to the cane can help users climb the stairs by attaching to any kind of railing and adjusting to their size and using the motors to help pull the user upwards as a form of assistance," Tizon said.

“With the materials at hand and also what we know in terms of robotics and technology, we thought that this simple innovation, although quite simple, can still prove quite effective,” he added. —Celine Serquina/NB, GMA Integrated News
