Mayon Volcano logs 28 rockfall events, 4 quakes
Twenty-eight rockfall events and four volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Mayon Volcano in Albay province, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Wednesday.
In the municipality of Guinobatan, some motorists had difficulty passing through roads due to fallen rocks and debris from Mayon Volcano.
PHIVOLCS on Tuesday warned areas close to Mayon Volcano that heavy rains carried by Tropical Storm Kristine may cause volcanic sediment flows or lahars, muddy streamflows, or muddy runoff in rivers and drainage.
Potential lahars and sediment-laden streamflows may occur along the Miisi, Binaan, Anoling, Quirangay, Maninila, Masarawag, Muladbucad, Nasisi, Mabinit, Matan-ag, Bonga, Buyuan, Basud, and Bulawan Channels.
“Mayon lahars can threaten communities along the middle and lower slopes and downstream of these channels with inundation, burial, and washout,” said PHIVOLCS.
According to PHIVOLCS, Mayon Volcano’s crater glow and plume were also obscured.
The volcano also released 1,064 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux on Monday, October 21.
Mayon Volcano is currently under Alert Level 1 due to low-level unrest.
Entry into the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone of Mayon Volcano is not allowed, as well as flying any aircraft close to it.
