AHEAD OF HALLOWEEN

October's supermoon to light up night sky

With Halloween right around the corner, a supermoon called "Hunter's Moon" will light up the night sky on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024.

Based on the calendar of astronomical events of PAGASA, the full view of the supermoon may be seen in the country at 7:26 p.m.

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said this type of full moon occurs when the moon is closest to Earth in its elliptical orbit, appearing slightly larger and brighter.

"According to the Farmer's Almanac, with the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it is time to hunt. Since the harvesters have reaped the fields, hunters can easily see the animals that have come out to glean (and the foxes that have come out to prey upon them)," said NASA.

"The next full Moon will be Thursday morning, Oct. 17, 2024, at 7:26 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). This will be late Wednesday night for the International Date Line West time zone and early Friday morning from New Zealand Time eastwards to the International Date Line," it added.

This marks the third of four consecutive supermoons of 2024. The next supermoon will be on Nov. 17, 2024. — Sherylin Untalan/ VDV, GMA Integrated News
