12 volcanic earthquakes recorded at Kanlaon Volcano

Kanlaon Volcano had 12 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said on Sunday.

The quakes were recorded within the period of 12 a.m. Saturday to 12 a.m. Sunday, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin.

A total of 2,669 tonnes of sulfur dioxide were also observed on Sunday, it added.

Moderate plumes rising up to 200 meters tall were likewise observed and these drifted southwest.

The volcano edifice remains inflated, PHIVOLCS said.

Alert Level 2 (Increased Unrest) remains in effect at Kanlaon Volcano on Sunday, it added.

With this, sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may possibly occur.

PHIVOLCS reminded the public that the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is off-limits.

Likewise, flying aircraft close to Kanlaon Volcano is not allowed.

Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, erupted last June 3.

This prompted PHIVOLCS to then raise the Alert Level from 1 (Low-Level Unrest) to 2 (Increased Unrest). —KG, GMA Integrated News
