4 volcanic quakes recorded at Kanlaon Volcano

Four volcanic earthquakes have been recorded at Kanlaon Volcano in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said on Sunday.

A total of 6,367 tons of sulfur dioxide was also emitted by the volcano on Saturday, the third highest SO2 emission for 2024 at Kanlaon.

Voluminous plumes rising up to 700 meters tall were also observed. These drifted northward, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin.

The volcano edifice is also inflated, it added.

Alert Level 2 (increased unrest) remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano, PHIVOLCS said.

The agency reiterated that entry into the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone is prohibited.

Likewise, flying aircraft close to the volcano is not allowed.

At Alert Level 2, Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, may have sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, PHIVOLCS said.

Last June 3, Kanlaon Volcano erupted, emitting plumes that rose to 5,000 meters. —KG, GMA Integrated News
