FDA launches task force to fight bird flu
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched a task force to address Avian Influenza or Bird Flu, the agency said on Thursday.
According to a statement, the Task Force Alectryon led by Director General Samuel Zacate is seeking a proactive approach against the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus through implementing control strategies, such as vaccinations.
The task force will evaluate and assess drugs and vaccines that are “safe, efficacious and of good quality” to combat the spread of the potentially lethal virus.
“The FDA fully supports the administration’s program to help the local poultry industry and ensure the availability and affordability of poultry products and its by-products; all for the purpose of attaining food security,” the FDA said in its statement.
The FDA also encouraged the veterinary pharmaceutical industry to submit applications for Avian Influenza (AI) vaccines to support efforts to counter HPAI.—RF, GMA Integrated News
