Magnitude 5.1 earthquake jolts Surigao del Sur
A magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported in the waters of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur on Monday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
In its report, PHIVOLCS said the earthquake, which has a depth of focus of 10 kilometers and was tectonic in origin, occurred at 6:52 a.m.
No damage and aftershocks are expected due to the earthquake, PHIVOLCS said.
Surigao del Sur has been rocked by powerful earthquakes recently, including one that measures magnitude 7.4 that hit Hinatuan on December 2. As of Sunday, December 10, a total of 4,386 aftershocks have been recorded with strength ranging up to magnitude 6.6.
Three people were reported killed and 76 people were reported hurt in Caraga and Davao region following the Dec. 2 quake, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
On December 4, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake was reported off the coast of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur. A total of 1,983 aftershocks have been monitored with magnitudes ranging up to 5.8 magnitude.
