Taal Volcano emits plumes; Phivolcs warns of volcanic smog
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the sighting of volcanic smog or vog over Taal Lake on Friday morning.
Phivolcs said the 3000-meter steam plumes were seen forming at the Taal main crater lake before it drifted north-northwest.
The release of 3,264 tonnes of sulfur dioxide gas was also recorded from the main crater throughout the day.
Phivolcs recommended the general public to limit outside exposure and wear N95 face masks for protective gear as vog may contain fine droplets of volcanic gas that may cause harmful effects to the eyes, throat, or the respiratory tract.
The release of vog may also cause acid rains, which can cause damage to crops and metal roofing, to areas reached by the plumes.
Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1 and under observation for any new significant development or activity. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
