PHIVOLCS: 26 quakes, 303 rockfall events recorded in Mayon Volcano

Mayon Volcano in Albay had registered 26 volcanic earthquakes and 303 rockfall events over the past 24 hours, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Sunday.

As of 5 a.m., PHIVOLCS’ bulletin showed that the restive volcano also had three dome-collapse pyroclastic density current (PDC) and one lava front collapse PDC events.

Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3 due to intensified unrest or magmatic unrest.

It also continued to have a “very slow effusion” of lava flow from its crater, reaching up to 2.8 kilometers along the Mi-isi Gully and 1.3 kilometers along the Bonga Gully.

There were also lava collapses on both gullies within 3.3 kilometers and 4 kilometers along the Basud Gully, said PHIVOLCS.

Mayon Volcano also emitted 1,145 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux on Saturday, July 8.

A moderate 1,000 meter-tall plume was also generated, drifting southwest and west-southwest.

The volcano’s edifice also remained inflated. —Giselle Ombay/KG, GMA Integrated News
