Pinoys have the least amount of sleep in Southeast Asia — study

A study conducted by consumer research and data analytics company showed that the Philippines has the highest prevalence when it comes to sleep problems, according to Oscar Oida’s report on “24 Oras,” Friday.

The study, conducted by Milieu Insight, involved 3,000 respondents from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

The results showed that the highest prevalence of 56% was observed in the Philippines.

Thailand, on the other hand, ranked second with 49%, while Indonesia placed third with 44%.

Vietnam showed 43%, while Singapore and Myanmar had 42% and 39%, respectively.

The study also found that 59% of the population in Southeast Asia gets less than seven hours of sleep.

“So when you don't get enough sleep, marami talaga syang impact on your health. That’s physical health, your physical well-being, as well as your mental health. You'll also feel it’s harder to start working, harder to focus, tapos syempre,  in the long run, it can also have cognitive deficit,” said Dr. Christine Celine Tan, sleep specialist.

“Yung pinaka basic would be having a regular time that you sleep. Ngayon kasi sobrang busy natin ‘di ba? So parang whatever time is left dun ka na lang matutulog. Right now, I think, we should change that mindset,” she advised.

She added, “Avoid any distractions when it's time to go to sleep. We try to tell patients not to use their phone in bed, not to watch TV in bed, so yung kama natin for sleep lang talaga.” — Carby Basina/BAP, GMA Integrated News
