Kanlaon Volcano had 500-meter tall plumes in past 24 hours —PHIVOLCS

Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental emitted moderate plumes that rose up to 500 meters tall in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said on Saturday.

These plumes drifted northeast, PHIVOLCS added in its bulletin

No volcanic earthquakes were recorded from 5 a.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday.

Kanlaon Volcano was observed to have emitted 1,089 tons of sulfur dioxide on Monday, June 5.

The volcano edifice is inflated, PHIVOLCS added.

Alert Level 1 (Low-level unrest) remains in effect in Kanlaon Volcano, PHIVOLCS said.

"Sa Kanlaon naman, it is on Alert Level 1 since 2020 and it still producing volcanic earthquakes for the past months... Kahapon, no volcanic quake was recorded," PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol said in an interview on Saturday on dzBB.

It reiterated that entry into the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone is prohibited.

Likewise, flying any aircraft close to the volcano is not allowed.

This is because Kanlaon Volcano may possibly have sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, PHIVOLCS said.

On Tuesday, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines prohibited flights from operating 10,000 feet from the surface of Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island due to its ongoing unrest. —KG, GMA Integrated News
