Magnitude 5 earthquake hits Sarangani

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake rocked Sarangani on Sunday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The tectonic earthquake, which occurred at 12:23 p.m., had its epicenter at 05.65°N, 125.29°E - 021 km S 28° E of the municipality of Glan.

The quake had a depth of 27 km, PHIVOLCS said.

It was felt at the following intensities:

  • Intensity III - Jose Abad Santos, and Sarangani, Davao Occidental; Glan, Sarangani; City of General Santos
  • Intensity II - Don Marcelino, and Malita, Davao Occidental; Alabel, Kiamba, and Malapatan, Sarangani; Polomolok, South Cotabato


PHIVOLCS said no damage is expected but aftershocks may occur.

The earthquake was initially reported at magnitude 4.7 but PHIVOLCS later updated its bulletin saying it was a magnitude 5. —KG, GMA Integrated News
