29 small phreatomagmatic bursts observed in Taal Volcano —PHIVOLCS
Taal Volcano in Batangas was observed to have had 29 small phreatomagmatic bursts in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Saturday.
These bursts ranged in length from one to five minutes, the agency said in its bulletin.
Two volcanic earthquakes were also recorded in the same period.
Meanwhile, the volcano emitted 6,702 tons of sulfur dioxide on Friday.
PHIVOLCS said there was a pronounced upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the main crater lake.
Voluminous plumes rose up to 3,000 meters high then drifted west-northwest.
PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 1 (Low-level unrest) remains in effect over Taal Volcano.
It again reminded the public that entry into Taal Volcano Island is prohibited as it is a permanent danger zone.
Also not allowed are occupancy and boating on Taal Lake.
Pilots were also reminded not to fly aircraft close to the volcano.
PHIVOLCS said Taal Volcano could have steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas, and cause minor ashfall. —KG, GMA News
