Did dinosaurs once roam the Philippines?

With traces of dinosaurs being discovered recently in Texas in the US and Argentina, Filipinos are wondering—did dinosaurs ever roam the Philippines?

On Kuya Kim’s “24 Oras” report on Thursday, Mines and Geosciences Bureau’s geology section chief general Dr. Maybellyn Zepeda said it was far from possible.

“Ang Philippines, iyong kalupaan niya, na-develop after the extinction ng dinosaurs, 65 million years. Since iyong dinosaurs ay terrestrial animals, I think quite impossible,” she said.

However, fossils of pre-historic animals have been discovered in the country. Some of these are on display at the National Museum of the Philippines.

Among these is the ammonite specimen, which is the oldest reported fossil in the Philippines. It was discovered in Mindoro and is estimated to be 65 million years old.

It serves as the first known evidence of animal life in the country during the Mesozoic era or the age of reptiles. – Franchesca Viernes/RC, GMA News
