ALERT LEVEL 1

Taal Volcano had 6 volcanic tremors, voluminous plumes —PHIVOLCS

Six volcanic tremors and voluminous plumes were observed in Taal Volcano in Batangas in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Saturday.

The volcanic tremors lasted two to seven minutes. Low-level background tremor was also detected, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin.

Voluminous plumes rising up to 1,800 meters tall were also seen, and these drifted northwest and west-southwest.

The volcano also emitted 7,205 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Friday.

PHIVOLCS said the volcano's upwelling of hot fluids in the main crater lake continues.

Vog or volcanic smog with was also observed.

PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 1 (Low-level unrest) remains in effect in Taal Volcano.

The agency reminded the public that Taal Volcano Island is a permanent danger zone and should be kept off limits, especially the main crater and Daang Kastila fissues.

Likewise, occupancy and boating on Taal Lake, and flying aircraft close to the volcano are prohibited.

PHIVOLCS warned that these hazards may possibly occur: steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas. —KG, GMA News
