Do dead whales really explode?

Residents of Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental were recently advised to stay away from a dead sperm whale that ended up on their shores.

According to #KuyaKimAnoNa on “24 Oras” Friday, this was because it could explode anytime.

The decomposing internal organs of the beached whale, which measured 60-feet long and 9-feet wide, could produce gas such as methane, which in large quantities could produce an explosion.

Kuya Kim said this phenomenon was not exclusive to whales because it could also happen to other animals.

Meanwhile, the municipal environment and natural resources office (MENRO) had conducted a necropsy on the whale to determine the cause of death.

According to MENRO’s Rodrigo Muda Jr., the animal was in an advanced state of decomposition but they had not found any wound. – RC, GMA News
