Why do penguins look like they are dancing when walking? Kuya Kim explains
Have you ever wondered why penguins look like they’re dancing when they’re walking?
According to Kuya Kim on Wednesday’s “24 Oras,” it’s because of how the feet of these animals are shaped. Contrary to animated films, they don’t really wiggle.
“Mapapansin natin, ang kanilang mga paa ay napakaliit at dinisenyo para makalangoy nang mabilis—webbed feet at napaka-iksi—hindi para lumakad sa lupa,” he said during his #KuyaKimAnoNa segment.
[We’ll notice that their feet are small and designed to swim fast—webbed feet and short—not to walk on land.]
“Kaya kung lumakad sila, para silang sumasayaw,” he added.

It’s common knowledge that penguins live in cold areas such as Antarctica and South America. As such, they are able to walk comfortably on ice. How do they do it?
“Ang kanilang mga paa ay may mga arteries na highly adaptive at nag-aadjust sa malamig,” he said.

In the Philippines, penguins were first brought in 2011 through Manila Ocean Park, which recently reopened its doors to visitors.
A report by Global Change Biology journal said that if climate change and carbon emissions would continue, 98% of emperor penguins’ colonies would be gone by 2100.
According to Kuya Kim, as the world continuously gets hotter, the ice where these penguins live and breed also melts. – Franchesca Viernes/RC, GMA News
