Why are bats thought of as scary? Kuya Kim explains

Many people think bats are scary, but these animals are actually helpful to the ecosystem.

As explained by Kuya Kim on “24 Oras” Friday, bats are seen as scary because their wingspan can reach up to six feet; they have big and round eyes and sharp teeth; and they are nocturnal creatures that people mistake them for aswang or evil creatures.

In reality, bats are usually seen hanging upside down from a tree branch because their wings are not that strong. It also makes it easier for them to fly by just letting go of their grip.

Bats also have a strong immune system which makes them less susceptible to diseases, but more prone to carrying viruses. However, these creatures should be taken care of because they help preserve the ecosystem.

“Binabalanse nila ang ating ecosystem. Kung wala ’yang mga bats na ’yan, dadami yung mga insect, magkakaroon ng infestation,” said Don Guevarra, chief of the regional public affairs office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Central Luzon.

In some countries, bats are hunted and considered a delicacy. The Philippines, however, bans the killing and selling of these animals. – RC, GMA News
