A school in Bohol becomes a finalist for the UAE's Zayed Sustainability Prize

A school in Bohol is among the finalists in the Global High Schools category of the Zayed Sustainability Prize.

The students of Bohol Wisdom School came up with an automated water-quality monitoring system for aquaculture ponds, which landed among the 30 finalists in the prize's 2022 cycle. It is already quite an achievement, as the Zayed Sustainability Prize received 4,000 applications.

"The school hopes to mitigate the loss of fish in the Philippines, while learning about water quality, food waste fertilisers, and tech innovation," the statement on Bohol Wisdom School's project read on the Zayed Sustainability Prize website.

Additionally, the project aims to "deliver benefits to students and the local community for the next 20 years, impacting 1,000 students in the first five years alone."

Meanwhile, outside the school, the project aims to help fish farmers increase productivity.

The Bohol Wisdom School is one of the finalists for the East Asia & The Pacific under The Global High Schools category, a category that "recognizes project-based, student-led sustainability solutions."

The winners will be awarded in January 2022. They have up to $100,000 at stake.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize is UAE's pioneering award for sustainability. It is an annual award "recognizing the achievements of people driving impactful, and inspiring sustainability solutions."

The 30 finalists are vying for 10 awards across the categories of health, food, energy, water, and global high schools.

The finalists were selected by a jury composed of former heads of state, government officials, and international business figures. — Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/LA, GMA News
