Two earthquakes hit Surigao del Norte


Two earthquakes struck Surigao del Norte on Sunday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The first earthquake occurred at 10:59 a.m. and had a magnitude of 4.9. It was first reported to be at magnitude 5.2.

Its epicenter was located at 10.12N, 126.17E - 015 km N 42° E of Burgos, Surigao Del Norte, PHIVOLCS said.

The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of nine kilometers.

It was felt at:

  • Intensity IV in Burgos and Sta. Monica in Surigao del Norte;
  • Intensity III in Dapa, San Isidro and General Luna, Surigao del Norte
  • Intensity II in Hinunangan and Silago, Southern Leyte; Surigao City and Soccoro, Surigao del Norte.

 

PHIVOLCS said no damage and aftershocks are expected.

The second earthquake occurred at 11:20 a.m. and had a magnitude of 5.8.

It had a depth of 10 kilometers and its epicenter was located at 10.39N, 126.61E - 072 km N 55° E of Burgos, Surigao Del Norte.

 

 

Intensity III was felt in Dapa and General Luna in Surigao del Norte.

The quake was also tectonic in origin.

PHIVOLCS said no damage and aftershocks are to be expected after the second earthquake.

Meanwhile, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake also struck Burgos, Surigao del Norte at 11:40 a.m.

The quake’s epicenter was located at 10.15°N, 126.18°E - 019 km N 38° E of Burgos.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 12 kilometers.
